Analysis of Learning and Development Needs
To assess the learning and development needs within an organisation we attend to the business context: the current requirements, the vision of the future, the medium and long term strategies - in order to analyse:
the demands of each category of role in terms of skills and abilities
the skills and abilities of each individual
Some or all of these methods may be used:
1. The repertory grid technique in discussions with managers to discover the abilities and skills of excellent performers
2. The mapping technique to draw the professional internal and external customer relationships, both formal and informal, that each person has. We ascertain the demands these connections make of the person-in-role as it is these demands which construct the job description
3. A skills audit by getting staff to self assess their current skills and abilities, and a wish list of desired skills and abilities, through 1:1 discussion, focus groups or a paper based questionnaire
4. Reviewing other HR processes to assess that they are coherent with the learning and development function
